چکیده

This paper describes operational aspects of a novel approach to active rule processing based on a transaction transformation technique. A user deened transaction , which is viewed here as a sequence of atomic database updates forming a semantic unit, is translated by means of active rules into a new transaction that explicitly includes the additional updates due to active rule processing. It follows that the execution of the new transaction in a passive environment corresponds to the execution of the original transaction within the active environment deened by the given rules. Both immediate and deferred execution models are considered. The approach presents two main features. First, it relies on a well known formal basis that allow us to derive solid results on equivalence, connuence and optimization issues. Second, it is easy to implement as it does not require any speciic run-time support.

An Integration Rule Processing Algorithm and Execution Environment for Distributed Component Integration

The Integration Rules (IRules) Project provides an active, rule-based approach for supporting eventdriven activity in applications involving distributed software component integration. This paper presents the execution model, transaction model, and integration rule execution algorithm of the IRules environment. The paper begins with an overview of the IRules language framework to establish the ...

A Framework for the Specification of Active Rule Language Semantics

We present a formal framework that can be used to specify and study a number of different semantics for rule execution in active databases. We shall consider the core of several active rule languages that are already available (e.g., Ariel, Starburst and HiPAC) but whose rule execution is specified only by informal descriptions. The framework is based on a generic active rule language and relie...

Integrating Active Concepts into an Object-Oriented database System

This paper describes the active, object-oriented database system SAMOS being developed as a research prototype. Its main approach is the integration of rules in the sense of active database systems into a general object-oriented data model. Our effort is also focussed on integrating the rule system with transaction processing in a meaningful way.

An Evaluation of Distributed Computing Options for a Rule-Based Approach to Black-Box Software Component Integration

* This research was supported by NSF Grant No. IIS-9978217. Abstract This paper presents an evaluation of distributed object computing technology and the manner in which such tools can be used to construct a distributed framework for active rule processing. The results are presented in the context of the Integration Rules (IRules) project, which is investigating the middle-tier, rule processing...

Multi-Parent Subtransactions Covering the Transactional Needs of Composite Events

Rule-based (re)active systems are a commonly accepted solution in the area of nonstandard applications in order to express an event-driven and constraint-driven system environment. Several attempts have been made to integrate active concepts into object-oriented databases and to extend active knowledge models to gain more and more expressive power and flexibility. Unfortunately, execution model...
